The Great Bridge Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), was founded over 125 years ago in 1894, in Norfolk, Virginia, and is the oldest chapter in the Hampton Roads area. Our members continue a long tradition of preserving local history, supporting active-duty and retired military personnel, volunteering throughout our community, and we would love to have you join us! The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890, and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. It is a non-profit, non-political, volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. The four founding women sought to create an organization that would perpetuate the memory and the spirit of the women and men who achieved American independence.
Historic Preservation
DAR members participate in a wide variety of historic preservation projects as it is crucial to saving our history for future generations. This includes commemorations and wreath laying ceremonies; restoring and maintaining historical sites; locating and marking patriot headstones; and preserving genealogical records, artifacts and historical documents.
Education
The DAR supports a variety of different scholarships, programs, contests and awards to help educate America’s youth. The DAR offers many different resources for teaching subjects such as the Revolutionary War, family history/genealogy, the colonial period and early America. Additionally, the DAR promotes adult literacy, the U.S. Flag, and African American and American Indian Patriots of the American Revolution.
Patriotism
Patriotism is the foundation of the many DAR activities that take place in local communities across the country. DAR volunteers at Veterans Administration Medical Centers; supports active-duty military with care packages, cards, and phone cards; promotes Constitution Week; presents patriotic awards; and assists and welcomes naturalized citizens.
